AI and Sports Coaching

Artificial Intellegence (AI) is entering the sport and fitness industry at a faster rate than expected by trainers and coaches. There is no denying that traditional coaching methods provide many advantages, but with the intergration of AI tools, fitness training and sports coaching is entering a new era.

The new era allows trainers and coaches to analysis and optimise players performance in ways we have never seen. From schedule planning, training monitering and making training more specific to the individual needs, AI is revolutionizing sports for all involved.

For many trainers and coaches, using AI or implementing AI tools can be very daunting, but its important to see AI a hyper-intellengent assistant.

We touched on a few points on what AI brings to training and coaching, but lets dive into a little more depth to get a better understanding:

Dynamic, Hyper - Personalised Training

For many years, coaches applied a single workout for the whole team. With the use of AI coaches will be able to automatically adjust training daily intensity and volumes based on the individual or small group needs. Its will also be able to apply real time recovery metrics and performance trends.

Automated Biomechanical Analysis

Before trainers and coaches used their phones, to record an athletes swing, stroke or running stride. Using the naked eye they would go frame by frame to analysis an athletes form and mechanics. This was very time comsuming, but with computer vision and AI tools, you can analysis and evaluate an athletes technique and form down to the milimeter. You will be provided with instant data and feedback, so that adjustments to technique and form can be made instantly during training.

Injury Prediction and Recovery

One of the biggest areas, where AI has had its biggest impact is in injury prevention. Using AI powered tools such the WHOOP and Hume Band, Ora Ring, and Smart Watches, trainers, coaches and athletes are able to track heart rate, sleep patterns and muscle loads. With the data and information provided you will be able to flag early when an athlete is over trained or at risk of injury. This will allow trainers and coaches to make adjutsment to training load, for the affected athlete.

Rapid Opponent Scouting and Tactical Insights

AI can ingest hours of game footage in minutes. Its will be able to analysis your oppponents tendancies, playing patterns and formations allowing you to build targted game plans. During live matches, AI will be able to assist with you with real time adjustments to your line ups and make tactical tweeks based on live game analysis.

Resource and FacilityConflict Management

Managing pitch times, weight room, courts and staff availability can quickly become an adminastrative nightmare. Using AI, can help map facility usuage and practice times across different teams, ensuring that two teams arent booked for the same facility. AI can also balance staff scheduling, so that all positions are covered without double booking or overworking staff members.

With the revolutionizing impact AI can have on the fitness and coaching industry its important to understand that AI will never replace trainers and coaches. AI, cant feel, think, coach or have a human connection. AI may expose bad coaching, but the best coaches will always be the best and dont see AI as a threat. They see it as a tool for reifinement, a hyper-intellegent assistant that will eliminate the guess work and raise the standard of coaching and performance.
