When it comes to sports, no country exhibits greater passion than Australia. For years, Melbourne has been recognised as the sports capital of the country. The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground hosts major events, including the Boxing Day Test match, the AFL Grand Final, the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the Australian Open, which is the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. Additionally, it is home to one of the world’s biggest horse races, the Melbourne Cup.
With all these world-class sporting events taking place in the city, Melbourne attracts loyal and passionate fans who wholeheartedly support these occasions. However, its status as Australia’s sporting capital may be challenged by its northern rival, Brisbane.
Brisbane boasts a rich sporting history and its own success. Suncorp Stadium, affectionately known as Lang Park, is a mecca for rugby league fans, and the State of Origin game between Queensland and New South Wales is a must-see event at the stadium.
In recent years, the achievements of Brisbane's sports teams have drawn significant attention. The Brisbane Lions have made the last three AFL Grand Finals, winning two titles back-to-back. To add to the pride of Brisbane fans, the Lions are the most successful AFL team of the 21st century, having won five premierships.
While the Lions dominate the AFL, the city's biggest NRL team, the Brisbane Broncos, has also made headlines. The Broncos staged a remarkable comeback from a 14-0 deficit to defeat the powerhouse Penrith Panthers at Suncorp Stadium, before winning last week's Grand Final against the Melbourne Storm and ending the club's 19-year premiership drought. This marked the Broncos' second Grand Final appearance in three years.
Moreover, we cannot overlook Brisbane’s NRLW team, which has reached another grand final and holds the honour of being the competition's most successful team, having won three titles.
Other sporting successes emerging from Brisbane include sprint sensation Gout Gout, who is on track to break records and become a national sporting star. In swimming, Queensland and Brisbane also dominate, with a record 33 swimmers from Queensland selected for the Paris 2024 Olympic Swimming Team.
In a recent ranking by Burson Global, Brisbane was rated 20th in the world and first among Australia’s sporting cities. The city’s athletic achievements over the years can be attributed to significant investments in women’s sports, grassroots sports, and local clubs, ensuring athletes of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to thrive. This ranking reflects not only what Brisbane has achieved but also what lies ahead.
With Brisbane set to host the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics, we can expect world-class infrastructure to be developed in the city, along with increased participation in sports. This will further contribute to Brisbane's continued success as a passionate sporting city......
