Get Behind Hong Kong

I have developed a strong interest in the Hong Kong China Rugby Internationals in recent years.

Initially, attending these matches allowed me to enjoy international rugby with my son and friends while appreciating the Hong Kong China Rugby domestic league players.

However, the more I attended the games, the more I felt rallying behind the team as they pursued qualification for the Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027. Having lived in Hong Kong for 15 years and been involved in rugby both as a player and a volunteer coach, I never imagined there might be a possibility for Hong Kong to qualify for the Rugby World Cup.

Don't get me wrong—as a South African, my heart will always belong to the Springboks. However, having the chance to cheer for and support two countries at the World Cup gives me goosebumps and fills me with excitement.

What would it mean for the rugby community in Hong Kong, China, to secure a place in the 2027 World Cup in Australia?

First, it would be a historic achievement. Hong Kong China Rugby has never qualified for the Rugby World Cup and would be making its first appearance. This milestone would elevate Hong Kong's status in international rugby, building on its dominance in the Rugby Asia Championships.

Qualification would also increase the game's visibility globally, not just in Hong Kong. It would inspire players at the grassroots level and contribute to the region's vibrant rugby culture, encouraging expat and local children to take up and continue playing rugby.

Success at the Rugby World Cup would attract more sponsorship for Hong Kong China Rugby, enhancing infrastructure and grassroots programs. The rugby sevens tournament is Hong Kong's premier sporting event, bringing international teams to the city for an exciting rugby weekend. Qualification for the Rugby World Cup would draw more attention to Hong Kong as a rugby destination and increase the number of international fans for future events.

Competing against stronger teams will help develop players' skills and provide valuable experience, strengthening the team in future games. Sports can unite people, and qualifying for the Rugby World Cup will unite diverse communities around a shared sporting achievement.

Qualifying for the Rugby World Cup will positively impact Hong Kong by bringing people together, increasing the game's popularity, and increasing the visibility of rugby in Hong Kong beyond the Rugby 7s. Watch Hong Kong, China Rugby take on Korea in the Final Asia Rugby Championship/World Cup Qualifying game on 5 July. A win could see Hong Kong, China Rugby achieve one of its most significant sporting achievements: Qualifying for the Rugby World Cup.
