Rivalry

If you love rugby, then I'm sure you're excited for the first test between the Springboks and All Blacks this Saturday.

Being involved in the build-up to the first test made me think about rivalries in sport and how they can affect people, communities, and countries.

It's important to recognise that rivalries in sport are built on a mix of history, regional identity, and high-stakes drama. They turn ordinary games into cultural events, uniting communities and sometimes dividing households.

Take a moment to consider: what are some of the greatest rivalries in sport?

Football - Old Firm Derby: Rangers vs Celtic

Basketball - Celtics vs Lakers

Rugby - Springboks vs All Blacks

Certain core factors intensify these rivalries and influence how they impact people and communities.

Here are some key drivers that shape these rivalries and affect their influence:

Geographic Proximity & Shared Territory: "Derbies" or local rivalries (like Celtic vs Rangers in Glasgow, or the Yankees vs Mets in New York) thrive because fans share neighbourhoods, workplaces, and schools. Victory brings immediate, undeniable bragging rights.

Contrasting Cultural Identities: Many rivalries reflect broader social clashes—such as working-class versus upper-class, political divides, or differing team philosophies (for example, Barcelona's homegrown style versus Real Madrid's star-studded approach).

High-Stakes Historical Scars: A single controversial play or a devastating playoff loss can foster resentment that lasts for decades. The memory of past heartbreak adds an extra layer of tension to each new encounter, like Lakers v. Celtics in basketball.

Collective Identity & Belonging: Supporting a rival team creates a strong sense of shared identity among fans. Rituals, chants, and game-day rituals forge lasting bonds, even among strangers.

Civic & Economic Energy: On derby days, local economies get a boost—pubs, restaurants, and transit fill up—while entire cities gather around a common focal point.

The Tribal Downside: The same passion that fosters camaraderie can sometimes turn into toxicity, leading to hostility, tribalism, and conflict when boundaries are crossed.

Rivalries in sport are wonderful because they bring communities and people together and showcase shared passion. Still, it’s important to be aware of the divisions they can cause and the impact they may have on everyone involved.
